The European Defence Fund supports projects involving Estonian ICT companies with 365 million

In the latest round of applications from the European Defence Fund, sixteen international projects with the participation of Estonian ICT companies received funding, with a total of over 365 million euros allocated from the fund.
According to Siim Sukles, Undersecretary for Defence Industry and Innovation at the Ministry of Defence, the newly announced results show that the Estonian defence industry is remarkably strong at the European level.

“Our companies and organizations are able to offer high-level knowledge and solutions that ensure success in the European Union’s defence research and development cooperation,” he said.

62 international initiatives were selected as funded projects within the 2024 application round, with a total volume of 1.065 billion euros. Estonia is participating in sixteen of them, with the total support allocated to them being a third of the total support funding to be disbursed.

Siim Sukles emphasized that the success of Estonian companies and research institutions is based on long-term experience, innovative ideas and targeted work in developing new defense solutions. Participation in projects strengthens Estonia's defense capability, supports the development of strategic capabilities and creates new opportunities for the growth of defense industry exports.
The Estonian Ministry of Defense also supported the successful projects. Out of 12 projects with Estonian participation, five are supported by the Ministry with co-financing totaling more than 1.4 million euros.

Among others, the Estonian-led project Citadel Range received support from this round of applications. It is led by the CR14 Foundation. The project allows countries to jointly conduct cyber exercises with a larger data volume and higher quality. In addition, the projects SPADER (Space Debris Removal System Using Concentrated Solar Rays) and iMUGS2 (Multipurpose Unmanned Ground Systems) are also led by Estonia.

Other projects involving Estonian companies include new solutions for infantry fighting vehicles, an artificial intelligence-based transmitter system, and 5G communication solutions. In addition, the field of military medicine is being developed and simulators are being created to provide more realistic learning and training. Estonia's participation in the projects is diverse and encourages innovation. The European Union will invest approximately eight billion euros in defence research and development in 2021-27 through the Defence Fund. The programme will help reduce the fragmentation of weapon systems in the European Union and contribute to increasing European competitiveness and cooperation in defence research and development.
